Join Twister in the Caribbean for winter sun sailing around de Lesser Antilles as she sails around the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean Sea. Spend 9 days sailing and exploring these beautiful turquoise waters while sailing from St. Maarten, Nevis, Montserrat and Îles des Saintes.
You will start your holiday on the island of St. Maarten. Although the hilly Caribbean island of St. Maarten has a Dutch and a French part, they share enough traditions that it can be hard to tell where Sint Maarten ends and Saint-Martin begins. Although the diverse island is flatter in the west, the mountains result in the phenomena of rain shadow which dries the trade winds. This makes the island drier than other islands located in the northeast Caribbean Sea.
We might also visit the beautiful Charlestown of the vulcanic island Nevis. Together with St. Kitts, or ‘Liamuiga’ (fertile land) as their pre-European inhabitants called her, the island is part of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Nevis can be recognised by the volcano Nevis Peak. It is a great challenge to visit the top of the mountain, hiking through different climates such as a cloud and a rain forest. If not covered in clouds, it is possible to have a stunning view over the Atlantic Ocean. You might see the red-necked pigeon or the African green velvet monkey since most of the original flora and fauna are still intact since the mountain has not been changed.
We sail past Montserrat where the Soufrière Hills volcano erupted in 1997. You can clearly see the remains as the city of Plymouth is covered under ashes, just like Pompeii. In the past, the Rolling Stones had their music studio here, where their inspiration grew. There is no fixed itinerary for your sailing holiday so there is no guarantee that you will reach all the islands listed as Twister will need to sail where the wind and weather take her. The Skipper will have a better idea of the holiday plan as you board Twister and will give a briefing on your first evening. But rest assured where ever you sail in this beautiful part of the world – you won’t be disappointed.
The beauty of being on a ship in these breathtaking islands is that we can take you to the unspoilt, authentic Caribbean, away from the busy resorts and beaches. Experience true Caribbean culture, from small fishing villages to lively, colourful carnivals. The crew will aim to give you time to explore the islands as you wish, finding harbours to berth at and secluded bays to anchor in. Feel the sand between your toes, soak up the wonderfully colourful Caribbean culture, snorkel with the fantastic marine life or simply kick back and relax on the beach.
Wildlife in the Caribbean is a real treat. Spot graceful Green and Loggerhead Sea Turtles gliding effortlessly through the water and Bottlenose Dolphins swimming with the wake of the bow. Whales also frequent the Caribbean sea, with the warm water providing the perfect breeding grounds at this time of year for the humpback whale. Birdlife in the Caribbean is an incredibly beautiful sight. Keep your binoculars ready to spot these colourful delights. With species only native to the Caribbean, these are once-in-a-lifetime encounters! Pink Flamingos are also a common bird across the Caribbean islands; these sociable creatures inhabit the blue lagoons, mudflats and lakes, living in colonies that can contain thousands of individuals.
